Remember your first "advertising" job? Or some sort of "marketing" internship? Canvassing? Cold calling? Tonight I was reminded of how lucky I was to have avoided such an experience (fluorescent signs for my lemonade stand doesn't count), but then again, maybe I was missing out?
Tonight Danielle and I were having a beer on campus and we were approached by two girls promoting the new movie The Uninvited. We got hooked up with some swag a ton of free tickets for Wednesday night at 7:30pm. If you're interested shoot me an email (yaybia@gmail.com).
I want to applaud their effort for braving the sub zero temps to promote a sub par movie (PG-13 is not scary, people) in the name of a future advertising or PR career. I jumped into an office gig right away, but with the current job outlook I can't help but think that handing out free tickets might end up being a bill-payer. Anyways, that being said. I'm curious to know what your first "advertising" job was. Or that part-time position on your first resume that screamed "this wasn't advertising but I made it seem that way."
First "ad" gig? Do tell!

On my part my first gig was pretty good - I worked at the Edinburgh (Scotland) Festival as a press assistant.
I saw the glamorous side of the job, rather than the bit which involves shifting random toilet cleaner brands. So sadly I was one of those people who gets into the industry with a misconception of what actually goes on!
Telemarketing --> American Eagle --> Auction clerk/web hosting/eBay sales/antique store/small biz accounting --> Gap --> piano teacher --> Minnesota Daily --> CM
pretty logical path if you ask me
Piano Teacher, Sandwich Artist, Office Temp, Waitress, then, my first ad "job:"
Creative Intern at Greer & Associates.
Nanny --> Soccer Coach --> Rosemount Park and Rec Leader (not only did I watch the kids, I made fliers and promoted our programs) --> Forever 21 --> Inver Grove Heights Park and Rec Leader --> Radio Disney Street Team and local on-air promotions --> Wilson Library --> space150
barista-->agency intern-->aramark intern--> photo intern--> agency intern--> agency intern
Yep I majored in interning.
Erin, great question!
I hung up posters and handed out gold-foiled chocolate bars for Gwen Stefani's Sweet Escape album...
KMart (ugh)--> waitress--> Administrative Intern --> External Affairs Intern --> PSB!
Started my working life horribly in a polyester red smock, and so far its been only uphill from there!
Oops, totally forgot ARAMARK INTERN.
I was a merchandising manager in a cosmetics store (which meant I made sure product went where it belonged and that end caps were pretty and made you want to buy Ralph Lauren fragrances). I used that as a "I can influence people's purchasing decisions" experience in an interview :)
My job history went more like this: cashier/customer service manager (rainbow) > bartender/beer bitch (golf course ) cosmetics retailer/merchandise manager (ulta) > HR/Benefits Specialist (target) > Wine seller (world market) > Media Buyer (CM first, now ARAnet)
Never interned... probably should've!
Children's Farm School > Coach > Bartender/Senior Deckhand > Photoshoot Production Intern > Media Agency Intern > Broadcast Production Intern > UNEMPLOYED. wah wahhhh.
Senior Deckhand is directly related to advertising. I can tell you how.
oh geeze...everything lead to advertising, here is how:
nanny (making sure everyone is in the right place at the right time is good training for a producer) -->
summer camp counselor (that helped train me how to work with creatives ;) jk jk i kid) -->
Elf (yep, dead serious, 8th floor of Macys, and man could I make kids smile on Santa's lap!" -->
Telephone researcher for the U (taught me communication skillz?) -->
Fallon.
I kind of decided that NSAC is also a great ad gig... how many of you have learned more from that than some of your internships?
